~ bits & pieces #5 ~

Making more squares for my VOPS blanket.

Two of my mini orchids have flowered.  They are so pretty and so easy to take care of.  The mini orchids only need one ice cube every Sunday.
I bought these 3 at Giant for only $1.29 each.  I guess the flower people at Giant thought that they were done for.  The orchid on the left in the bottom picture shows no sign of flowering now, but I'm sure that it will eventually.

New hooks for a friend.
I hope she likes them.

I had plans to go to the campground last Thursday and stay for a few days - my family has started making plans for the Haunted TeePee and a meeting was being held on Saturday.  Well, I had to cancel on that because I had to stay home and wait for a phone call from the manager of AC Moore.  But guess what?  She never called.  What a kick in the butt.  Don't tell me you're going to call and then don't.
Oh well - maybe she'll call this week.

I wish you all a great week.  :)

  2. I hate when people promised to do things and then don't follow through. It is like they blow you off and don't care, their word means nothing. The hooks are so pretty. love the beads you put on the ends. Every time I see some orchids I am tempted to buy one. They are always so pricey, and they never reduce any prices. If they do then it musta been someone else who got the deal, not me. I didn't realize the smaller ones just require an ice cube weekly, was that part of the care instructions or did you learn that somewhere else?
Hope you have a good week.

    1. Hi Susanne. When I buy these orchids they have cards on them. They are called 'ice cube orchids' - the small ones take one ice cube and the large ones take 3 ice cubes. They're very easy to care for. :)

  3. Hi Debi, the orchids are pretty, I've never tried to grow them before. The crochet hooks are a great gift and I'm sure the recipient will enjoy them very much. I've been playing around with different motifs and stitch patterns lately. Hope you are well. Hugs, Heather

  4. You can never rely on people to call when they said the would. I found that out the same . I love your Orchids. I thought they were so difficult to take care of. Maybe I should try that. I have been wanting to ask you how you made your blog header the way you did. (with all the different size boxes, etc. I want to redo my blog style and would like to make a header. I guess I'm just computer illiterate.

Have a great day, Take Care and May God Bless you

    1. Hi Sherry. I made my blog header in Picasa - that's where I upload all my pictures. :)

    2. Speaking of Picasa, I went to it to look a some group pictures I belong to. I found all my pictures, public and personal on there. I figured out how to delete but I couldn't figure out how to move pictures into albums. Can you help me with that. Thanks for letting me know where you got your blog header

    3. To move pictures into an album - click on the picture and it will go to the tray on the bottom left. Click on the little green lightning bolt to hold that picture there. Repeat for however many pictures you want to put in the album. Then click on the little book icon and a selection will pop up asking you what album to add the pictures to. Click on 'new album' and then type in what you want. Then click 'ok' and it will make the album for you.
To make a collage - at the top of Picasa - click on 'create' and it will drop down a menu - click on 'picture collage' - add the pictures you want - play around with the different buttons to get it to look like you want and then save it.

  5. I'm sure your friend will like the hooks; I still like the one you gave to me a few years ago very much :-)
Nice orchids! I think you talk very sweet to them ;-)

  6. Your orchids are just lovely. You did a wonderful job on the crochet hooks. I too love the glass beads on the top. But what makes them the best gift is that they were made especially for her. Don't you just hate when people promise to contact on a certain day or time and then don't. It always leaves me feeling that they consider their time more important than yours. I really like your blog header!

  9. What pretty little orchids. I'm glad they got a new home with someone to care for them. Those hooks look really nice, and I like the little touch you added at the top of the handle. Sorry to hear about the campground. I remember seeing pictures of another of the Halloween haunts you all did and it was so neat. Looking forward to seeing what you do this year. :)

    1. Thanks Charlotte. I do have a cell phone, but the reception at the campground does not always work (too many trees I guess). :)

  12. Do you shape the hook handles by hand? I bought some with bamboo handles and I like them but I have a lot of others without and they are hard to use. I would like to make their handles bigger.
Do you need a certain light for the orchids? I do not have a lot of window space for plants but would love to try them.
I dislike the people that say they will show up in the am but never show until 4 or 5 pm and never call to tell you. I fuss and the company says "oh they were suppose to call you and let you know" Well hellllo!
oh well good thing everyone is not alike in this world.
Have a great day and week and month. God bless

    1. Hi Aunt Dee. I have instructions on how to make the hook handles here: http://hooksandyarns.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-crochet-hooks.html
The ice cube orchids require bright indirect light. Here is a good website for them:

  14. Oh the orchids are so pretty. So the trick is an ice cube every week. I have a blue orchid that I hope makes it, and I am going to try this trick. :-)

Oh my goodness...integrity: "Doing what you say you will do when you say you are going to do it"! I am so sorry you waiting around for the call that did not happen. It really "eerks" when that happens.

    1. Hi Astri. If your orchid is an ice cube orchid and a regular sized one - it will take 3 ice cubes every week. :)

  17. Are these orchids specifically called "ice cube orchids" on the tag, or do they have another name? I have never heard of putting an ice cube in a plant for watering. That's very interesting and sounds like my kind of plant. Love that yours is blooming. So pretty! Seems the only thing I can grow are succulents and a certain plain ivy. No green thumb here. I'm also going to try paperwhites this year if I can find some closer to Christmas. I think that's when they come out in stores. I've always wanted some.

    1. Hi Pammy Sue. Yes they are specifically called ice cube orchids. That caught my attention because I knew it would be easy for me to take care of them. :)
