~ an octogon motif ~


Materials:
- 4-ply worsted weight acrylic yarn
- J hook

Size:  6 1/2" side to side

Note:  ch 2 at beginning of Rnds 1 & 2 does not count as a stitch

Directions:
Rnd 1:  Ch 4, join with a sl st to 1st ch to make a ring.  Ch 2, 16 dc in ring.  Join with a sl st to 1st dc.  (16 dc)

Rnd 2:  Ch 2, 2 dc in each dc around.  Join as before.  (32 dc)

Rnd 3:  Ch 4, dc in same dc.  Ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc.  *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4.

Rnd 4:  Sl st into ch-1 corner space, (ch 4, dc) in same space, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in ch-1 space, dc in next dc, dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next dc.  *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 corner space, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next ch-1 space, dc in next dc, dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join as before.

Rnd 5:  Sl st into ch-1 corner space, (ch 4, dc) in same space, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in ch-1 space, dc in next 3 dc, dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next dc.  *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 corner space, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next ch-1 space, dc in next 3 dc, dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join as before.

Rnd 6:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each dc and ch-1 space around with (sc, ch 1, sc) in each ch-1 corner space.  Join with a sl st to 1st sc.  End off.

  6. Very nice motif but I'm wondering how I can make an afghan out of this pattern. I'd have to make a bunch of little squares to fill in the spaces. Would I make these 10 stitches wide, 11 stitches wide, or maybe 9 inches wide and however many rows to make it square?

    2. I used rows 3 to 6 only with 4 corners for the square and it fits great
